Iryna Zarutska was a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee who fled to the U.S. in 2022 to escape the war in Ukraine. She settled in Charlotte, North Carolina.

What Happened to Her
On August 22, 2025, she was fatally stabbed on a LYNX Blue Line train at the East/West Boulevard station in Charlotte’s South End around 9:55 p.m. She died at the scene from multiple stab wounds to the throat.
The suspect, Decarlos Brown Jr., a 34-year-old homeless man with a criminal history, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. The attack was described as random, with no prior interaction between them.
Brown stabbed Zarutska three times in the neck and fled the train. He was later hospitalized for minor injuries before being jailed. Zarutska’s family started a GoFundMe for funeral costs, describing her as hardworking and seeking safety. Her death raised concerns about public transit safety in Charlotte.
